Royally Speaking: Will Camilla be Queen Consort ?

Will Camilla be Queen Consort ? Is a frequently asked question in my socials and the answer is: yes, she will be the Queen Consort. Of course everything is possible and I absolutely can't predict the future so I'm not saying this is 100% what her title is going to be, I'm saying it's what most likely will be.

The Queen Consort matter begins when Prince Charless and Camilla got engaged back in 2005. Oddly enough, it was announced that when The Prince of Wales acceded to the British throne Camilla wouldn't use the legal style of Queen Consort, instead she would be style as Her Royal Highness The Princess Consort.

The decision to issue such statement was probably made to avoid ill feelings toward Camilla because the Queen Consort title was still associated with the previous Princess of Wales, who would have taken the title in the future.

As Dickie Arbiter, former Buckingham Palace spokesman, said: “When the engagement was announced in February 2005, Clarence House were at pains to make clear that when Prince Charles became King, the duchess would be known as The Princess Consort. Coming as it did eight years after the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, sensitivities were running high and the title Princess Consort was seen as a compromise pleasing some but not all.”

The Princess Consort title is normally used by the wife of a sovereign prince, like Grace Kelly, who was Princess Consort of Monaco after marrying Prince Rainier III. Such title has no historical precedent under English common law, where the wives of kings are automatically queens.

Legally speaking (and according to my research), the Queen Consort title is established by precedent and, with the exception of the Sovereign’s title, is the subject of royal prerogative and not of Parliament's regulation. Therefore there's no need of a new law to give The Duchess of Cornwall the status of Princess Consort.

However, In 2018 the announcement was quietly removed from Clarence House official website, which is a strong indication that The Duchess of Cornwall will be styled as Queen Consort upon Prince Charles' accession.

(Besides, let's face the fact that Charles wouldn't want his darling wife to be anything last than a Queen).

What no one can deny is that since her marriage to The Prince of Wales, Camilla bacame a great asset to the Royal Family and is very hard working and extremely dedicated to the causes she supports.

As Arbiter also added: “The duchess through her work has shown herself to be a good support to her husband and to the Queen, thus making her not only an asset to the country but to the institution of monarchy, so when the day does ultimately come, Camilla will take her place alongside her husband not as Princess Consort but as Queen Consort.”

So my conclusion is: She definitely deserves to be Queen Consort and she'll be amazing!
